From 26th May 2012 websites have to be compliant with legislation known as the “EU Cookie Law”.

Cookies or similar devices must not be used unless the subscriber or user of the relevant terminal equipment:
a) is provided with clear and comprehensive information about the purposes of the storage of, or access to, that information; and
b) has given his or her consent.

In summary, websites have to:

State whether Cookies are used
Publish the names of Cookies
State what purpose they serve
State what information they hold
State how long they are stored for

The purpose is to ensure visitors are aware of any information being tracked as they use websites.
